The dark truth behind milk

It might seem like there's nothing more natural than a kid with a glass of milk -- but what's in that glass could be anything but natural.

Painkillers, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories -- you name it, it could be in there... because while it's illegal to sell milk tainted with those meds, it isn't even tested for most of them.

European researchers recently did what food officials around the world won't: They tested some milk, and found that you could be getting up to 20 drugs and hormones with every sip.

There's something to think about next time you see one of those "milk mustache" ads.

Using a sensitive new test, researchers from the University of Jaen in Spain found all kinds of drugs and hormones in milk from cows, goats, and even the human breast -- but they say the highest levels of pharmaceutical backwash turned up in the 20 samples of cow's milk they tested.

They found anti-inflammatory painkillers such as niflumic acid, mefenamic acid, and ketoprofen along with 17-beta-estradiol, which is a form of the sex hormone oestrogen.

The researchers also found steroids, anti-fungal drugs, and even an anti-malarial med.

And we're supposed to believe this does a body good?

The only caveat here is that the study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry was done in Europe, and that the milk samples tested came from cows in Spain and Morocco.

But don't make the mistake of thinking U.S. cows are any better -- because they're not.

Our milk is only tested for a handful of the dozens of drugs we know have been given to dairy cows. We know this, because these cows eventually end up in slaughterhouses where they are tested -- and all the things that aren't supposed to be in the milk turn up in their meat.

When the FDA tried to pull some milk samples for extra tests earlier this year, the dairy industry and friendly agricultural officials in 10 states revolted, saying it would lead to a disruption in the milk supply.

But if that garbage is in the supply, it should be disrupted -- permanently.

There's no easy answer here -- although I will say that plenty of health experts agree that milk isn't nearly as necessary as the Milk Mustache marketing team would have you believe.

You can live a full and healthy life without this stuff -- but if you can't give up the moo juice, at least go organic.

It may cost a lot more than regular milk... but you're paying for what's NOT inside.

Since goats don't need to be fattened up to weight 1000+ lbs, like dairy cows, then by nature I think goat milk will have less horomones in it.

As far as nutrition, goat milk is closer to human milk and has more calcium, vitamin-A and selenium! However, it does have less b vitamins.

I like the milk flavor from the La Mancha breed of goat milk (Trader Joes). The breed (Toggenburgs, etc) used in other farms (Mayenberg), does not taste as good to my palette!

Re milk contamination. You have the target in sight, but you missed the bullseye - by some distance.
You suggest going organic. What really does that mean? Organic pasturtized milk? Grass fed milk cows? Raw milk? Just what does your suggestion cover. It's a good track you are on, just finish it.

I tend to agree with you when we are talking about conventional milk supply; that which is produced by big dairy and put on the shelves of stores. It would have been nice if you had done equal service to the raw milk and mostly-raw-milk producers who have NONE of these problems. I know some personally. Their animals have no contact at all with the kinds of stuff you are referring to in the article. They are fed grass, which is what cows are supposed to be eating. The ground growing the grass is chemical free. And that milk is a great food source. In case you have not heard of it, there is a good book on the subject called "The Milk Book" by Dr. Douglass (retired MD) that goes through the myth, facts, political corruption, bad science, etc. around milk and what raw and mostly raw milk actually is IF it comes from animals handled the way they should be.

Doesn't pasteurized milk lose all its beneficial enzymes, etc., from the heat?
Does or does not homogenized milk break down the fat particles so small that they pass unchanged through the gut wall directly into the bloodstream? I have heard both yea's and nay's. Plus a third opinion that goat's milk particles are equally small enough to remain in suspension, so why are its fat particles safer on the gut than homogenized cow milk?
I buy raw whole organic free-range grass-fed cow milk from a local organic farm. One of my family refuses to drink it, saying brucellosis may strike at any time, thus prior brucellosis testing means nothing.
Any answers will be welcome.

We are former WI dairy farmers and our milk was tested every time it was picked up by the milk bulk truck. If it contained anything except milk - it was dumped! It was checked for antibiotices, bacteria, and everything it could be tested for. Our milk HAD TO BE good in every aspect.

Before you can make the claim that those chemicals are not in"organic"milk it would be interesting to know how those chemicals end up in the milk in the first place.
My suspicion is that it's through the feed and the drinking water.
Since the latter may be a substantial contributor "organic" milk would also be contaminated.
So, you would have to test all milk before you can say that "organic" is better.

make your own almond milk: 1 cup almonds with 3 cups water in a high-speed blender like a vita-mix. Add dates for sweetness. Strain through a nut bag and reserve the pulp to make cookies. Enjoy in your coffee.

I wholeheartedly agree with comment number 9 - we could learn a lot from the animal kingdom where the young of the species STOP CONSUMING MILK a short while after they begin eating solid food. Humans don't need milk, whether child or adult. Only babies who can't consume solid food need it. And we are designed to produce HUMAN milk for our HUMAN babies. The idea that it's a necessary health-promoting food for children and adults is nothing more than a big multibillion dollar marketing scam!

Why did God promise the Israelites who were freed from the bondage of Egypt a land flowing with milk and honey is we shouldn't drink the milk. I use milk is recipes and in my breakfast shake. Just like eggs from pastured chickens, milk from a grass fed cow is a perfect food. The problem for us now is that Holstein cows are prolific in America instead of Guernsey and Jersey cows. Cattle farmers feed them corn and soy beans. As time passes, our food will be continually contaminated. Oceans and lakes will die. Humans will come close to annihilating all life from this planet. I believe I read that in the Revelations of Jesus Christ. If you want to know the truth of what's happening on this earth, read Revelations. Jesus said to His disciples we must repent and begin to hear and do the word of God. We must be baptized by submersion so that we can be included with those who will be resurrected when King Jesus returns. What we see happening today is only a microcosm of things to come. God's wrath is coming on an unrepentant world but don't believe me, believe your bibles.
