Walk into a pharmacy in Canada. In Australia. In Japan. And you'll see the same thing. Big Pharma drugs at prices that make you think you're at a going-out-of-business sale. But Big Pharma must be laughing at all the suckers here in the U.S. where we pay 50-90% more for the very same drugs. Same formula, same Big Pharma companies pumping them out, same everything. For years, Dr. Wright's been trying to change that. And for a little while, it looked like we would finally be able to get our hands on those much-cheaper drugs from other countries. When President Obama was in the Senate, he was the co-sponsor of legislation that would allow pharmacies to re-import drugs at much lower prices. But, now that the legislation's in front of the Senate for voting, he's changed his tune. Recently, voting on a health care reform bill amendment that would finally allow U.S. pharmacies to import cheaper drugs from other countries was delayed. The reason? The FDA commissioner spoke up, saying the Obama administration doesn't support the bill. Gee, I wonder why? Could it be that Big Pharma just won't let it happen? The American public is their cash cow! Why would they give that up? They already have to sell American drugs for much less in other countries, where prices are controlled to protect the people. But the FDA's putting a nice little "safety" spin on it. They might be contaminated! They might be counterfeit! They might be dangerous! Of course, all of this is absolutely ridiculous. Is the solution really to fly drugs to Japan, then put them right back on a plane to re-import them into the U.S.? Am I the only one who thinks a step could be cut out in there? If we already know Big Pharma can afford to sell their wares for pennies to the dollar in other countries, then the jig is up. If they can do it there, they should do it here. But we've all been lulled into this "cost of research" sob story, while Big Pharma laughs all the way to the bank. So what can we do about it? The same thing we always do-- speak up, loudly and often, until our voices are heard. Contact your U.S. Congressperson or Senators. And remember: Your voice counts. In fact, your voice represents over 1,000 similar opinions. Members of Congress looks at each constituent opinion voiced as equal to at least 1,000 people who didn't bother to speak up.
